My PHP Journey
Hi,
I started with hobby webpage design, got appointed as a html designer, in those early internet days. some customer asked for those cgi-mailer stuff, my host did not allow me to look into the code, searched the web and called friends, someone suggested something called PHP exists which is free, and works on many operating systems, the pre-installed stuff came installed with a linux distro. so my linux and php came together. later got php installed on windows, initally with xitami, then sambar and atlast the bigdaddy apache.
then mysql was very natural, never tried postgres as it was not easy on windows, the one reason being phpmyadmin. shared some of my code to the community via sourceforge.
after some time i decided need to be in a bigger and happening place , here i am in bangalore employed as a PHP project leader
Now with 7+ years experience, want to share my experience, writing a blog, want to write a book as well, blog helping me to recollect my memories and practicing writing(too long since i wrote besides code)
PHP Project Management Blog
i am starting my personal blog to put my thoughts , experience, knowledge to share with fellow PHP project managers and future PHP managers
this blog gives, info for managers with reasons to choose php and peculiarities on PHP, has reviews and links for php components. also has short articles on i18n and l10n and some SEO tips based on real experience

Well there are so many of these that probably no-one cares, but what the hell.
I'm a student of Aerospace Engineering at Sheffield University, UK. Java is my language of choice, as I use it for avionics programs, although I started with C/C++ (well, I actually started with JavaScript, after getting over the immature "HTML kicks arse" stage... go on, admit it, you went through that too). I got into PHP fairly recently, but its quite easy to learn the basics, so I'm getting on fairly well. I'm just doing PHP for... err... fun, and working on building a website for a friend.

Hello everybody!
Greetings from Massachusetts. I'm just starting out in PHP and have one site under my belt so far.
I'm studying filmmaking at the Tisch School at NYU, but graphic design, photography and programming remain very high on my list of enjoyable activities.
See ya'round

I'm Jay. As you can probably guess by my username my second name is Shields
I'm 17 from West Yorkshire in England.
I have always been interested in the internet, and after using PHP-Nuke for a gaming clan website I used to be in, I was sorta the site admin. I got into Nuke alot, modding it and making blocks etc. That lead me into love with PHP. I offered to make friends and family websites (for businesses etc), and they were just modified versions of Nuke. I then split from using Nuke and went right into PHP. By this time I'd started my own website @ http://www.jay-designs.co.uk.
I now design/code websites on my own, as a self employed one man company!
Recently bought a PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Websites book, 600 pages, I'm 50 from finishing it.
Now I've just finished my first PHP script, PHPJayMail (http://www.jay-designs.co.uk/download/s ... Mailv1.rar), I only coded it because my newsletter program on my PC broke and it was hard to find a free program that did it in the first place, so I figured I'd make my own.
All that b***ocks a side... I'm currently in my second year at college studying computing, we code simple stuff in VB6 and it's pants
Next september i'm off to uni, hopefully using PHP there...
Hobbies are fitness, obv. any sort of computing, gaming, etc. I play MoH:AA alot still
Not much esle to say really.
Cya
edit:
if you cant be bothered reading all this, read the above post, but change his name for mine and Gran Canaria to Leeds! LOL.

Hullo,
From Calgary, Alberta(Canada) here.
Have a bit of a confession to make, I hate PHP. Mostly because I don't understand it and it causes me endless amounts of grief. I would however like to do something about that, and I figure that maybe this could be a place to start making some sense of the language.
I'm employed as an in-house graphic designer and programming is deginately not my strong point.
I feel a little guilty being here as I know there are lots of people who post to graphic design forums that I frequent that have very little to offer and are constantly leaching off of others. I unfortunately am this person here, I would like to contribute so if you ever have any type of graphic/web design issues on visual side I would be more than happy to chip in to pay my room and board in this forum.
Thanks in advance.

I started out with an interest in landscape photography which led to editing a charity journal, other DTP jobs, and eventually into building web sites. Design was interesting and creative, I thought, but I swore I'd never get into programming.eraserNubbin wrote:Hullo,

A few years later, I'm an obsessive programmer. I think the key discoveries for me were OOP and testing (see sig link). OOP design is quite a creative field and testing puts you back in control of the code rather than being at the mercy of frustrating bugs. These are advanced topics if you're starting out but I just thought I'd mention that programming can be quite satisfyingly creative too.
As a programmer, you do need to develop the skills to solve problems on your own but don't be afraid to ask when you get stuck. You can also try searching the forums - quite often you'll find a few posts relating to your problem.spyderwoman wrote:I bought a book that I am very disappointed in to learn php but will try to stick it out and not waste too much of the people's time on this board with simple questions.

Identifying!
I'm surprised I hadn't posted in here yet.. oh well.
I've got a colorful background. By age eight, I had circumnavigated the globe eight times by distance. I've travelled the world, lived in many countries, and have at some point spoken 3 languages.
I started programming over 20 years ago, in Basic, migrated to Pascal, found my way to C, stumbled into C++, did a long dance with the OOP fairy, and then gave up programming for a few years.
Then, almost four years ago, I found Blacknova Traders, an online web-based game. It was GPL'd, and fun, and written in php. I jumped in and found a bunch of bugs and a missing feature. I whipped up a version of the feature, and the next thing I knew, I was given cvs rights.
Long story made short (too late), I ended up forking BNT. In the years since then, we've been working on a reverse fork, and the next version of BNT is over three years in the making. Its exciting. The vast majority of BNT is procedural code, and since thats where I spend my time, thats what I've become most familiar with.
In my day job, I do Information Security at a Fortune 20 company. Part of that work includes security testing, evaluations, and more. I also get to do some PHP programming as well. Since all of my code at work is "pure", and from scratch, I get to draw on my OOP knowledge for most of what I develop.
I've been published, I've contributed patches to roughly a dozen opensource projects, and I'm considering doing conference presentation next year on the PHP circuit. I'm working on my ZCE, and several articles on multiple PHP sites.
I come here to learn more, because despite my background, I don't pretend to know everything - far less in fact. I value the community here, the respect for diverse viewpoints, and most importantly, the people willing to ask questions.
I spend most of my time in the security, code, and theory sections.
