i'm reteaching myself C++. i forgot how much of a pain in my ass it can be. you can do so much and be so damned dirty and dangerous with it. i can't wait to write my new website in it. well, apache module, same difference.

welcome aboard.
C++ was cool in high school, but I have since realized that I was nowhere near interested enough in programming applications to want to learn it in depth. I'm not a fan of desktop apps as I am of web apps. Give me PHP or C# and I'm a happy dude.

Welcome to the sandbox :)

i like PHP too but you'll never get the speed of a C Apache module. i'll make it OOP and use C++. i love C++ and can't wait to get back into it. what sucks is that it's been 2-3 years since i've honestly touched it in depth so i can't fix my stupid errors. a friend is coming over saterday so that'll get me back on track lol.

i plan to write some desktop apps as well that communicate over a network but for right now i'm focusing on C++ web applications. not CGI either. a module that does the website. good times.

Howayiz

I'm a pretty low level programmer from Ireland. I just finished college where I mostly did design. Now I've realised I much prefer programming. I work part time as a code monkey and general CMS hacker type and spend the rest of my time reading everything I can on web development, php and general theories of software architecture. So essentially I'm here to leech knowledge from all you big brains! When I'm not bashing away at my 'puter I'm probably playing piano for the Jangly Handles Blues Explosion.

So there ya are...

Hi all, i've just started learning php. I live in Finland (but i'm not Finnish) and I am a graphic designer. I'm learning the whole LAMP thing at the moment hoping it will help me get a job.
I've had no official schooling in php, computers or programming. I have read plenty about it though.
So i'm looking forward to getting to know you lot though the forums.
Cheers.

Hi everyone. I'm new here. Not entirely new to PHP, I know most of the basics, but only started learning about 2 months ago. I used to never do web dev (console apps in C++, C, Python and Perl were my thing) then I took a complete break from anything programming (didn't program, go on linux, or do anything advanced on a computer) related for a few months and discovered I liked web development when I came back :P.

I have no formal education in programming and don't plan on having any from my high school. Here's why: I won't touch Java with a 10 foot pole.

PHP framework wise: I like CodeIgniter, although I'd prefer something more like Ruby on Rails, which I like a lot (like PHP on Trax), but I'm still trying to figure out how to get PHP5 to work on my free hosting which they say is supported.

I do most of my developing on my iBook.

If the class is available, you should take it. It's a high-level language, so most of it's concepts are universal from one language to another.

Hi

I've been browsing this forum over the last few days... wow. Lots of good information here.

I've been programming for a good long time (13 years, maybe?). For a long time, through about 2001 it was just desktop, C/C++. After college, I took a few years off, and have been working using bastardized JScript in a market research-specific application. About 3 months ago, an internet friend asked me if I knew php and if I could help him fix up his vbulletin site. I said yes (hey, I saw it once), and since then I've been full force in to learning php, and all the web stuff I've missed out on over the last few years. I'm doing freelance programming & web design when I'm not at work. I hope to be able to contribute here soon. For now, I'm just going to soak up all your knowledge :)

Hi!
First, sorry for my English - it is not my mother language :)

I'm 32 years old. I've been programming for about 16 years. I started with C, C++ and Pascal. My first big (relatively) project was a visual editor for TurboVision (that is part of the OOP libraries in Turbo Pascal 6.0 and 7.0 with Objects for DOS). After that I had a little experience with Visual C++. Then I moved to web design area - a lot of Javascript OOP programming.

6 years ago I've started my own business - a small ISP. So, I had to learn about system and network administration for Linux - especially QoS.
Also, I've build an entire ISP accounting system in Perl. I've written some of the www interfaces in PHP (including WAP interface).

During the last 3 years I have written about 10 commercial www sites in PHP. Recently, I discovered AJAX and I do love it now :)

Currently, I'm working on a call-center project - using Asterisk, AJAX, PHP and Perl.
Also, I have some participation in 2 Open Source projects.

I must say, that I was very surprised to find such a great forum and even more - great people with huge knowledge in IT.
One may asked: Why are you surprised? Well, I've been visiting 2-3 other forums and maillists for a long time and most of the answers there are RTM or RTFM ;) That is the patience and the calmness of the people here which surprised me a lot. I think I will have to get used with it :)

Thanks in advance for all the help I'll receive here :)

Plus, we tend to actually know what we are talking about instead of giving useless advice. :P

Just wanted to pop in and say hi. I've spent the last two hours searching through the piles of information here, and so far have answered the first 2 questions I came here with, so thanks for the help :)

I hope you don't mind me making an example out of you nykoelle, but that is exactly the thing I wish all new members would do. Glad you found us to be useful, and thanks for searching and finding before asking.

That's for sure!

The only thing that bothers me is that sometimes there are some posts here which do not educate people, instead they give pure copy-paste answers. I always try to not do this ...
I do really like the signature of timvw and follow its idea:
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.

I think most of our posts are debating with one another, but a lot of them just refer users to pages in the manual as well. Why bother teaching a man to fish when you can direct him to a portion of a book that is the official know-all of fishing, and allow him to teach himself? Things tend to stick when you have to put forth the effort yourself.
