I'm both new to the boards and php. I'm not even sure I qualify as new to php. I am pretty decent with html and I have done a fair bit of coding in irc, but google is my friend as far as programming goes. I found this tutorial which convinced me to try out php. I am just interested in learning and it sounds like I'll find plenty of applications as I go along.

I look forward to talking to you all.

Welcome aboard. PHP is pretty easy to understand as long as you have some sort of programming background. And then, there's always the DevNetwork to help push you along. :)

Yeah, I am setting up with XAMPP. After doing a little research, that seemed like a good place to start.

Hey, guess it would be redundant to say I was new here :P

I posted on several message boards before, namely IGN and a few smaller ones, before I found that I was asking questions about PHP development no one could answer due to the speed of the boards and the willingness of the users. I looked for a bit and found you guys and decided to join up.

I started out as Visual Basic programmer, but after a few years I had other priorities, and eventually had to stop.

I picked up PHP for <span style='color:blue' title='I&#39;m naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> and grins, and turned out I actually found it quite enjoyable to do, and just recently started freelancing for friends and people I know online, which is going well.

Right now I'm in good bearings where I'm at skill-wise with PHP, but there's still a lot I don't know when it comes to optimization and analyzation of script.
I'm proficient in MySQL, as I'm used to SQL Server. My father is an N-Dimensional cube analyst, working with companies like Pepsi and Nike to optimize their then overgrown and innormalized (word?) databases.
I'm in love with AJAX, as I used to create DHTML sites for fun as well before I threw myself into PHP.

Next up on my list is ASP.net, which I then want to use to segway into C#, and somewhere along the way I want to learn Java as a web development language as well, as from what I've seen it's an incredibly powerful asset that I want to use.

Well, look forward to seeing you guys more often, as I'm in for the long haul.

You've definitely come to the right place then. :-D

Hi

I started webdeveloping around the year 2000 in simple html and ASP, I discovered PHP a couple of years ago and have been developing in php since then, though I'm also capable of writing some Java, Actionscript, Visual Basic etc.

I work as a webprogrammer in my own business where we design & develop :)

Stumbled over this site and thought to myself that it's always nice talking with people sharing one's interests and reading other people's wievs on programming issues :)

I found this forum because someone on xkcd forums linked to an obfuscation contest from last year... and that sort of stuff interests me.

I started programming PHP professionally around 7 years ago.

I am Lafflin, that's my last name, my mother could only afford one name for me when I was born.
I went to a very expensive school here in virginia (ECPI) for a few years for Network security after getting back from Iraq and Germany (Germany is much nicer). The school was bulls**t and most of the students will never be qaulified to work at Best-Buy. I learned alot more on my own time than I did at that school, all that school did was put me close to bankruptcy. The point I'm trying to make is go to a cheaper school, most of what you'll learn will be dependant solely on you.

I decided that I wanted to learn HTML about a year ago and then Flash AND graphic design, one thing led to another mostly out of necessity. I recently had a vision of a small business database solution that I thought I would be able to market to several different types of unique small businesses. I decided to check out some on-line tutorials, and buy a book and I've done nothing except learn PHP for the past month or two. I love it and I plan on doing it for a while.
I thank you all for the help you have given me and I will be sure to spread the love in the future.

Oh, and I love the NY Jets with a childish obsession!
