Search count for terms on engines: seen it but source?

I remember visiting some "SEO" company (years ago) here in the town I'm currently stranded in that somehow had access to a really nifty tool that would display related search terms and how many times people searched for them on search engines allowing them to figure out what the best sets of terms to target for SEO purposes. I'm curious if this was somehow a hack job, a secret but intentional back door, a legitimate service that those who are aware of it keep their mouths shut to horde the benefits, or et cetera.
In example if you searched for the term chair it may come up with a table such as...
chair: 163,245
wood chair: 55,346
wooden chair: 44,335
folding chair: 22,645
lawn chair: 11,360
...from which you could pick out what other terms to search for etc. Personally I think they robbed the guy blind (I lost the job but this was years ago and heck I was still using Frontpage ha ha) though I thought I'd bring this up just out of curiosity.
