Resistors in TTL

Actually, my answer was incorrect. I'm just learning about it. I'm obviously not making my own ICs. :oops:

I've been looking at some diagrams, but it just doesn't make sense. I know what a transistor does, what a logic gate does, and some other stuff, but I just don't understand why you have to have getups like this:

It seems like something like this:

would work, but it's never shown that way.
