Australians! Totally non-PHP question!

Post by greyhoundcode »

When I watch Neighbours (yes really!) the characters are invariably chatting away inside a bar or pub. Oddly enough though they aren't depicted drinking pints, rather little quarter-pint glasses. Is that for real, or is it due to legal restrictions about showing alcohol on TV or something?

In Australia pints were never really a widely done thing, though they're getting more popular in recent years. Depending upon what state you're in you're likely to get:
  • A pot - This is really a half pint, but it's just called a pot and is what most people drink
  • A schooner - This is about 3/4 of a pint and it's mostly a New South Wales thing
  • A pint
  • A middy - Again, it's more or less half a pint but in Western Australia they call it a middy
Neighbours is filmed in Melbourne which is in Victoria, so it's mostly pots down here. The majority of place serve pints now and in a few rare instances places serve schooners instead of pints.

It's not considered girly to drink half pints here. It's just the done thing. In the summer you wouldn't really want a pint unless you want to drink the second half of it warm :P

Yeah I guess that makes sense what with Australia offering a marginally warmer climate than up here. Schooner's a good word for a beer, like it!
