Who wants a graphics forum?

Post by feyd »

Since the idea is now buried under a mountain of "junk"...

Anyone want a graphics forum on PHPDN? Where the clueless at art, or the those just seeking how to create that neat-o effect in the 'shop can come for help or pointers.

If you are undecided, please post your concerns or whatever.

[edit]

there's also the potential to toss all the code questions about making dynamic graphics and image processing here too.

How would you guys feel about a Graphics/User Interface Design/Usability forum where it covers not just graphics, but the look and feel of applications as well. This is just as important in development of applications, and I could see that as good justification for adding a forum for it.

I wouldn't mind that at all.. since, as you said, those are important in application development.

User Interface Design/Usability that is a nice forum indeed..
but personally i wouldn't put graphic with them because.. well it's not related.. really ..

I mean somoene talking about how well this program is, look and feel, is not the same as "the graphic you create" for exemple wallpaper or website etc

my 2 cent ..

(waiting for jason to slap me :))

Not going to slap you, some good points. I would rather discuss this, as I am not always right.

These forums have always been PHP-Centric, and after PHP, developer centric. I could create forums for all types of things that interest people here, but that doesn't mean it improves the quality of the forums. Having a separate forum for Graphics might allow some people to post some cool graphics, but how does that relate to development?

The idea was that if you are discussing graphics with regards to web development (web graphics and buttons), it would be considered apart of the user interface.

Where would a flash interface go? It's a graphic, but it's also a user interface. So the idea of creating a Graphic/User Interface Design/Style/Layout type forum area would be to cover the visual side of programming.

The other thing I need to be careful about is getting too precise with the forums. For example, I don't have a MySQL forum. I have a Database forum. I don't have an Apache forum, I have an Apache/IIS/Web Server forum. Yes, I have a PHP forum, but this is a PHP-centric forum. I also have a Linux forum (and no Windows forum), but then again, I don't want to support viruses (hehe, okay, jk!). I don't have a CSS forum, but rather a Client Side forum that covers JavaScrpit/CSS/XHTML/etc.

Would a forum with a topic ONLY of Graphics be useful, or even really used?

I have no problem taking a broad topic such as the visual side of development, and making that a separate topic. I believe it would really be useful, and I would like to see it as well.

I don't know if you were here, but we used to have only one PHP forum. Because of the volume of posts in the forum, we split it into two forums. So for right now, we have a broad forum for Graphics and User Interface, and if it gets the number of posts we hope it does, we will eventually split it off into separate forums.

How does that sound?

You are right

Totally..Graph forum would be nice.. but there is no relation to php whatsoever..

So yeah..
nothing else to say

:P

EDIT :

Mhh i mean.. yeah adding a forum with mixed threads like the one u mentioned would be nice, very nice :o..

So I would be the first to welcom such forum, but also the first one to understand perfectly why it wouldn't be implemented..

A generic UI forum is totally fine for now.. There's no need, yet, for a graphics specific forum.

Well nyways Feyd nice idea, and i support it..100%

Because it would be nice to share not only coding (backbones of any formating) but also the visual aspect..

Jason,

This forum is slowly but surely starting to become more of a community about web development, rather than just basic php questions (like it was for the first year or so). Then it turned into Advanced Theory, Database, Client-side, etc. Unless you want to keep this community to a strict PHP forum, then let's do so. Otherwise, I'd love to slowly move the community into a web development community.
