User titles

Post by aaronhall »

Hey guys-

Just want to throw in a little suggestion. I think people should be able to make their own title under their name instead of the "Newbie" thing. I think it makes things a little more relaxed and it doesn't promote "post whoring" for a better title.

Any thoughts?

Better yet, the names should represent your skill level based on a vote from other users

Do you actually believe there are people out there posting more than they would otherwise just to get a "title"??? Does it really matter that much?

I mean.. we all know skill level has little to do with the ammount of posts one would make, and thus with the title. And though for instance you would not want my advice where sql is concerned but I can tell you exactly what to do with a flatfile... does that mean I need a special title or that I should know my own limits and stick to trying to help people on subjects I may know something about.

I dunno... it's a thought but is it really that important?

Believe it or not, yes. I've been involved in some forums that have had people posting <span style='color:blue' title='I&#39;m naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> just to get their post number up. I just wanted to make a point of it. In my opinion, it isn't so much about that. I'm very against the "I'm better than you because of my status" sort of <span style='color:blue' title='I&#39;m naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> that I see... especially in areas that are supposed to promote learning! For example, I'll go into a PHP IRC channel and can't get the time of day because I'm not an operator.

I know it isn't a huge issue, but it's just little things that can be changed. Take it or leave it.. just my opinion ;)

To be honest we haven't had much problem here at all. There's been a few times where new posters have thought that the people answering their questions are inexperienced at PHP because they have newbie as their status and that's about it but it's generally not nasty.

Aaron: I tend to agree with you. The other day, somebody posted a very intelligent response to a question, and some poster derided his advice (incorrectly, IIRC) because they were a 'newbie' and had only posted a few times. I would prefer leaving the titles up to the user, it would eliminate that sort of thing.

:) And Mac, you can still be a Master, we could reserve that title for you :)

Maybe the first title "newbie" should be changed to something else, maybe like "Non Spammer" or something :P

BTW: I am 133+ cos I have a c00 tag and I don't need to fake it to show I rules you 4ll

Hrm...I will change Newbie to Forum Newbie. I am not so worried about forum spammers, Mac and most others here keep a close eye out on that.

As far as being the master of these forums, yes Mac, you sort of have taken the forums by the horns. As long as we know who the real boss is.

I think my point about the user titles was still missed, but I guess you can't change the world ;)

Well, you wanted to prevent post whoring, which we don't see much of here, so right now, it's a moot point. Why eliminate something fun because a few people might abuse it?
