Can I suggest a rule regarding avatars .. Sequalit's is over 500kb. That's a little excessive. It's also really big. 30kb and 100*100 as a maximum wouldn't be unreasonable would it?

Those are fine by me personally.
And I agree with his avatar being excessively large in both file size and actual pixel size.
200x200 and 572kb is massive for an avatar.

Ouch yes....
We do actually state that it should be 80x80 pixels @ 6KB max but that's on the profile page.

People do still use land line connections that are nowhere even remotely close to being broadband. Like...me...

Fact is if I see a delay in a forum page loading, its going to get cancelled. (Or on some occasions I may just shift to Lynx - text only).
30KB is still quite high for an avatar graphic. My own full coloured avatar is under 3KB, you guys expect we 56Kers to support 10 times that??? Does no one bother optimising graphics anymore? Broadband hogs...shame on you...

Even for broadband users on a pay as you go (per GB) basis having a large avatar is cruel. 500KB for that image is excessive in any case. Half the reason we ask users to have their avatars less than 80x80 @ 6KB is for the very reason you indicate
PS: Links2 is better than lynx IMO -- annoying on wide pages though

All "normal" users are bound by the forum's guidelines of 80 x 80 @ <= 6K, even offsite ones. Moderators and Administrators have a bit more freedom with those guidelines as a reward for their dedication, added input, and tasks. Their rules are simply "within reason."
If you find that a user is violating the rule, please notify a (active) moderator, so they can coordinate with that user to return their avatar to within their applied rules. If need be, we can remove an individual's privilege to even have an avatar. We don't want to go that far, as that's a hair's width from the banning process.

I understand why we don't want to discuss politics here, but I didn't see anything that implied it in the forum rules. Could we add something to the rules about politics not being allowed?

Hm, no. Reason: politics is very tricky to define and while we don't want flamewars due to incendiary topics like "Was the attack on Iraq justified?", "Abortion is murder" etc., we don't want to stifle discussion and we want our board to remain about PHP and related topics. As is, it will remain a "soft rule" and at the disgression of the moderator team.

10.2 Do not contain images that are larger than 300 by 65 pixels in size.
Perhaps an increase to the width, 350px, could be in order? I'm thinking of the official userbars width.
Hey! I like them!

@~BornForCode: I don't see a problem with that as long as you don't start soliciting donations in your posts a la:
User1: Hey, thanks - that worked great.
You: Glad it worked - how about a donation?
Not that you do or necessarily would - the concern is to ensure these boards remain free & that people never feel obligated to pay for the help they receive.
