URL Shortening

http://edfgdfgficdfgdfgtion.sodex... (edited for shortness)

See this URL? It causes problems. Big problems. Wouldn't it be nice if it was automatically shortened like this:

Code: Select all

<a href=&quote;fullurlhere&quote;>http://beginnig...&and=23</a>
Just a thought. Would that be difficult to implement?

Would actually be quite easy.

Why does it cause "big" problems?

Well, actually, it doesn't cause big problems, although it's a pain in the neck to read, because the forum doesn't degrade it nicely (all the other text ends up getting wrapped to the big column: that means lots of horizontal scrolling)

And horizontal scrolling is *bad*

I highly doubt seeing a change like this happening, because of the fact that this is already unlikely on its own to cause problems with the width of the page. Even if there is, it does not take priority amoung our other plans.

Hmm... that's fine. It's not too bad, as long as you don't do something like this:

Code: Select all

8i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw358i5vrnaw3985gnyaw35
That would cause problems, but you can always edit the post, eh?

There are several valid instances where long strings without spaces are valid, where if we "formatted" them would then make them innacurate and invalid.

Yeah, that's why we have PHP tags that scroll to the right without affecting the outside forum. I can't think of any other places besides URLs (and thus my question). It's not every day you need a 100 character string without spaces.

You just made my point, so why bother with it?

Umm... I don't understand. Wasn't your point that there were valid instances of long uninterrupted strings, and then I tried to refute that by saying only code and URLs were that way (thus the suggestion)? Could you clarify?

My point was, however unlikely it already is to happen, it is not worth the effort.

Ah... I see. That's okay then.

it's a low priority, at best.. but I'll add it to the list.. number 30 sounds about right :P
