We have captcha. It doesn't help in the newer breeds of bots.

Captcha isn't the be all and end all.

phpBB's captcha isn't actually that good and was was been successfully broken a while ago. Moreover, it is unbearably easy to break.

Capchas are not the be all and all solution. It is fairly easy to crack simple ones with simple colour filters and character recognition. The latest captchas (formulae and image combinations are more difficult to crack) but suffer the problem of being hard to read by a normal user.

For more information on this subject see the wikipedia for capcha

don't get your panties in a bunch. i was saying that it's time to do something about spam/bot security because every day there are at least two.

i'm annoyed with it but i bet the admins/mods are moreso.

bringing it to the attention of people here so mayhaps something can be done. put in your ideas here.

Trust me, the spam is a pain in the arse for us all. We are looking at several mechanisms to thwart spam at the moment as we totally aware of the situation. Thanks for the suggestion.

We're awaiting the release of a smart looking tool for phpbb which should help a lot with this :) It's been discussed over the past couple of months among the mods so we will do something about it. Thanks for suggestions, if anybody does know of any tested solutions we'd be more than happy to venture a look into them :)

This is a php community after all, why can't we just make a mod for phpbb?

There are usually many more than that , but thanks to our wonderful (:)) mod team, we typically catch them very quickly.

We try to keep up with the most recent versions of phpbb, so we like to only use that have support and can easily be ported. We are all very busy people, so we generally shy away from this idea. Although, nothing is written in stone

The thread currently at the top of list in the moderator boards is "spammers" and has been floating around for the past month or more :)

http://unavailable.bbprotection.net/

Not sure on the status right now but it has been discussed.

Today the list of bannings for spammers has hit 7 and I'm sure that will rise by the end of the day

We're just so quick at dealing with junk it looks like two a day :P
