Expanding our toolset... let's be more emo!

Post by Kieran Huggins »

Some humble suggestions... I find myself constantly having to look up a few of these gems to include as an image.

Pretty please!

Is there a good reason to add those images to the list of smilies we are already use?

I can think of an obvious one for the Google image... the rest I'm not so fond of personally.

Yeah that's why I voted +1, because of the "Google" one and the "Off topic" one :P

I think so - it's important to have many auxiliary forms of expression in a type-only environment. Ambiguity and miscommunication is far too easy without tone of voice and/or facial expressions. These emoticons will only enhance our communication.

I certainly don't advocate having a thousand smileys, but I don't feel satisfied with the core phpbb selection.

Besides, the additional ones will stay hidden unless the "View more emoticons" link is clicked while posting... it can't hurt! And they're easy to install in phpbb!

And I'll be grateful! Right now I'm including them as images and it's a real PITA....

Thanks!

I say stick as we are. If you want extra ones, use a Greasemonkey script or something!?

The additional ones will stay hidden unless the "View more emoticons" link is clicked while posting... so it wouldn't affect anyone with the exception of giving them the option of using more (which is obviously in some sort of demand).

The only reason I would want to avoid using a greasemonkey script is because this way the text-equivalent is more syntactically correct ( i.e. :-) instead of ) and is less clutter in the database.

It only takes a minute in the control panel to add them - I'd offer to do it myself but I doubt the admins would be up for that.

Pretty please, admins? With sugar on top?

I see no reason to add them for the benefit of, as it stands, two users.

~Kieran, Do you use GreaseMonkey with Firefox? :) I know it's not too tricky to knock up a GM script to have all the smilies you want.

By that same logic, it was unnecessary to add [s]strikeout[/s], which serves no real purpose on this forum, unless one wants to enhance one's signature.

I'll stand behind Kieran on this one.

Go Habs Go! :D

It was wanted by more than [s]two[/s] three.

edit:

Okay, here's a compromise to satiate the few of you: I am willing to add some of them, but not all of them. The tumble weed one is a bit large (12K), and a few I feel are fairly inappropriate; specifically "I'm with stupid" and possibly the puking one. Everything else is fine by me.

Can you guys now come up with smiley tags for the remainder? If you feel the ones I'm wishing to exclude should be included, then please tell me why.

First, I never heard anyone asking the strikeout thing. Second, as of what I know, the smiles already exist, but only Mods/Admins can see them, so what's the big deal of allowing us to use them too?
