Code Challenge

Hello Moderators,

I think Code Challenge is really a good idea which can make devnetwork coders or residents more efficient towards php programming. Why not have a seperate group for Code Challenge in devnetwork forum.

It's been said before, but it probably won't ever happen. Who makes the problems? Who judges all the solutions? What are the judging criteria? What do you win?

The judging criteria alone is a massive issue. People have different opinions on what is good code.

Jay's got a point ;) It's difficult to motivate and coordinate a group of volunteers to judge things. If it wasn't for that it would be a great idea.

Who makes the problems?
Any member of the forum, Interested ones will answer
Who judges all the solutions?
Everybody of the forum who view the question or answers the question.
What are the judging criteria?
Depends on the point of view of the viewer
What do you win?
Participating itself is a great, one learns more ways and its a fast path of growing skills of a coder, what more a coder needs other than sharpening the skills. It improves different way of looking at a problem, more awareness.
I see lot of advantages for php coder who goes into that group.

For some reason I see this as turning into a "write a bunch of code for me for free under the guise of a 'challenge'" type of threads.

But you have rules always to block such questions. I think a little effort is needed only there.

Unless you make it a rule that the one that poses the problem also has to be the first to provide a working solution, then others have to better that solution.

Looks like a rule

With the challenge that I put forth, it shall be judged by a public poll. It would be much nicer if there was a seperate forum so it can be more organised (eg. each competition has an exercise thread and results poll).

I don't mind putting aside an hour or so every week or few days to continue the competitions. It's sometimes hard to think of problems, but most I get from little problems I bumped in to when working, or from a blog.

OK ... so the judges are: dude81, jayshields, mikeq, and Xoligy. :) You didn't know that submitting or replying to any post about Coding Challenges is also a submission of a judging application! We could throw a couple of moderators onto that list to add the oppressive thumb of the Man into the mix. ;)

So what are some ideas for the first Challenge?

For the second Challenge you mean ;)

Maybe start by electing a jury for this one (if onion2k will not agree to be the judge)
