Script/Site Feedback Forum?

Post by twigletmac »

What do people think about having a script/site feedback forum where people can post completed scripts or sites and ask for opinions on them?

We need the link to a working version of the script, then the source below. Maybe we can add on a phpBB mod that will allow us to rate the thread to tally up the score of the author's script.

The rating of a script can be done with a poll
< 3
3 - 5
6 - 8
9 - 10

Or something like that.

Hey!! That was my idear LOL!

Well...you seem to attract a lot more views then i did...and as long as such a thing gets there...i'm happy with it.

..I can already tell who will be the first in just copying a submitted code, and just use it for other purpusses, as it was his/her own.

Well I'm not generally an OSS Zealot, but in this case I think showing source is appropriate. This is envisioned, I think, as a tool for people to receive feedback on their site, its design (layout AND code structure), its security, its useability, etc. In short you're getting numerous unpaid consultants to give you some advice. What are you offering in return? If the source is shown, and licensed under one of the OSI-approved OSS licenses, then you have "paid" the community. You also give the consultants a better ability to comment on possible improvements. For instance without code if a person wants to check fo XSS scripting attacks or other vunerabilities, they would have to launch a rather formidable attack against the demo site you present. With code they can "just" check how thoroughly inputs are cleansed before use.

I guess it basically comes down to what vision the PHP Developer's Network folks have for this service. Is it a "Review My Site" or is it a "Review My Coding"? Most of the earlier discussion (from about a year ago) seemed to imply that people wanted the latter. They want help from the community to bring their coding to the "next level". That is I think a worthwhile goal for the network. Getting "Site Review" work seems more like a job for the "Job Hunt" forum, and a service for which you should be willing to pay.

If you put in a "Review My Site" forum, I fear it would quickly become overloaded with advertisements disguised as requests for help, since they don't actually have to ask for anything specific other than a "what do you think."

Spammers may use this just to send traffic to their sites. Since there aren't very many requests for site reviews as it is, I think that con would outweigh the pro of having an avenue for them.
