Why do Topic Reply Notifications require recipients to log in? For publicly accessible threads, this should not be necessary.

You shouldn't have to log in unless you click on the link to stop watching the topic. I'll log myself out and have a check though.

Done a couple of tests and it appears that you shouldn't have to login if you click on the first link to the topic. However, if you do as I have done innumerable times and click on the second 'unwatch topic' link then you'll be asked to login because it's related to your username's options.

If you are being asked to login after clicking on the first link, just post back and I'll do some more investigating.

This is puzzling indeed.

That is the strange thing. I knew there were two links, I knew what each did, and I was clicking on the upper link. Each time, it was the upper link that changed to the visited color in my e-mail client. This time, however, I was not required to log in. This is puzzling indeed. Perhaps there is some other factor about which we are unaware. Some kind of bug in phpBB perhaps?

Thank you for looking into the matter. I will let you know if and when it happens again, including as many particular details as possible.

It just happened again.

It just happened again. I definitely clicked on the top URL:
viewtopic.php?p=48740#48740

That URL forwarded to a login page with the following URL:
login.php?redirect=viewtopic.php&p=4874 ... 3129682633

I am 100% certain of this. The second URL--to stop watching the topic--has not been clicked. This is very strange; I do not see why one should need to log in to merely view a thread unless phpBB requires it so it can tell when to start sending notifications again, but that would be a silly, inefficient way of doing things.

I'm intrigued by that - I'll have a look around and see what it's trying to do.
