I've noticed when using these forums that, just like with most forums, a lot of users don't understand the questions being asked and give inappropriate or mis-leading answers to problems. It is not always helpful to go by the users "rank" (ie 'DevNet guru", "Forum commoner", etc), as this just goes on the number of posts submitted - and I have noticed that just because a user posts a lot doesn't necessarily mean they know what they're talking about.

Perhaps a kind of Yahoo Answers type of system could be implemented where users (possibly only topic authors) can rank answers given, this will allow users to get a reputation for themselves as good quality or poor aulity posts. It also allows users asking questions to listen to the more experienced users who have a reputation for correct and properly written answers.

As well as the obvious benefits a system like this will also promote more polite and more helpful posts, as no-one would want a poor reputation. It may also motivate normally idle users to try and help out a little more.

Just food for thought.

Well, this is not a beauty contest, and I think we should not rate each other ... There is topic for rating users however (for the 2009 awards)

I'm against it, I don't like reputation systems and have a bad experience with them.

I'm not big on ranking people either. I would probably be discouraged at helping people if others are reviewing and ranking me. Mainly because I don't have all the answers, I do make mistakes and sometimes I find it hard to understand what the root of someone's problem really is without a little back and forth dialog.

Also if I see "difficult to debug via a forum" type of posts languishing without any help I will make suggestions/guesses and try to help the person debug the problem. To someone on the sidelines who didn't bother to answer the question and is just skimming the guesses going on it might look like wrong answers to them, but then again they aren't trying to help either....

My feelings are pretty close to what Eric! said, but I want to emphasize that I think it's good for people to make suggestions, as mikemike did. If we don't discuss new ideas, we'll never be any better than we are, right?
