I try to check in here a couple of times a day, both to see the new posts and to check for answers to my questions or responses.

What I would really like though is an RSS feed of new posts with a different feed for each category. It would also be good to see responses to my posts show up in my feed too but that might be more complex.

There might be better overall community response from those of us that check our RSS feeds a gazillion times a day.

I might not check back here for more than half a day, but I look at my RSS feed almost constantly.

Thanks!

We had RSS feeds earlier, but they brought the server to its knees. RSS feeds need to be generated on an ongoing basis - ie, every time your reader tries to read the feed. That's a lot of DB work being done each time you read the feed. If we have dozens of people using feeds, thats lots of work on top of the regular traffic.

And no, our server isn't that powerful.

Well,

That answers that. But shouldn't there be some sort of RSS caching? In otherwords, once a minute or so, the database update the RSS feed and then the clients pull down just the xml file and you don't have ever reader hitting the database that way.

But as you said, your servers aren't that powerful. GET MORE HARDWARE! Don't you guys have unlimited funds?

The last time we tried, we just used a plugin. I'm not sure what sort of caching it implemented - likely none.
