Member Sites...

Hey, I just noticed that the PHP Security site, (phpadvisery.org) is apparently completely dead. The link from the portal homepage no longer resolves. The content at the site hadn't been updated in ages (like at least a year).

Does it do PHPDN any good to have completely dead member sites?

Why did the Security site die?

Similarly, why has the Tutorial site stopped posting new tutorials?

When I first joined this forum site about a year ago, I found the member sites very useful and the forums a wonderful, growing aspect of PHPDN. Now it seems like the forums ARE PHPDN..... What happened?

Is there anything any of us can do to help re-breathe some life into the other aspects of PHPDN?

May I just add that PHPComplete long since turned into very little more than Jason's personal blog (sorry jason, but it's true) and the EvilWalrus staff are making doomsday predictions about EvilWalrus dieing. Is this the end of world?

Yeah, I know last year I was trying to write a tutorial written for Jason's site, but my thesis exploded and I had no time for anything else so it never happened. Likewise I guess something happend to Part 2 of llimllib's tutorial. So it not Jason's fault.

However, I would like to see PHPDN be more than just forums, which is how it feels to me. I am very interested in the rumblings about a code/site review thing and would like to help set it up (Help, not do everything :) ) I wouldn't mind trying to write some tutorials, but I think it needs critical mass and not just one or two. Perhaps Jason, or one of the other founder's, can let us known where they see PHPDN going in say 1 year and 5 years? Is there a plan that we aren't aware of?

MrNonchalant: Your right, it has turned into my blog, which is unfortunate.

Alot of the problems with the PHPDN members right now is simply time. Personally, I am working to build a new company up, and anyone that has started their own company knows that it takes ALOT of time, and ALOT of your personal time as well.

What little free time I do get, I want to spend it with friends and family, enjoying life. This unfortunately puts the PHPDN down the ladder for me.

I have started a whole number of tutorials, just never finished them. I have a lot of programs (such as Phuse) that are just not finished. Most of this is because when I program, it's for my company. When I need to take a break from programming, I can't go do more programming.

I am not complaining at all, mind you. I just feel bad that I can't help build the PHPDN up as much as I wanted.

However, your feelings are indeed known. In fact, just the other day I posted to the PHPDN mailing list that as of right now, the PHPDN is nothing more than a name we give a bunch of sites, and we act like we are holier than thou. If we don't do anything (besides host a PHP focused forum), then the PHPDN really isn't anything besides the community, and the community made itself.

Unfortunately, I am the most active member of the PHPDN in the community side (here on the forums). However, don't let the fact that you are members of the site stop you, maybe we can form a committee, and all work together? The people here are far more active in the PHPDN than the webmasters are. Maybe we can turn the PHPDN around, into something more. I know it could be done, with your help?

When we started the PHPDN, we had all these visions of what we could do together. Nothing has really changed.

Do you have any other thoughts or ideas?

Well I am definately interested in helping out. I have a few hours a week I could devote to PHPDN development efforts.

Areas I feel I could help with:
Tutorials, concering Security, Database Design (especially for DB's that are more featureful than MySQL), or OOP.

Coding: I'm very interested in the oft-discussed site/code review functionality and would like to help make this happen.

If there are other projects out there, I'm might be interested...

yeah, i ahve to admit, i've been pretty absent when it comes to posting around here. I'm going to try to be better about it, and help out where I can, but with work and real life and all, things happen....

enygma: I need to send you the new mailing list page for the PHPDN mailing list. It includes several regulars here, and all are interested in doing things.
