New Cayman or Old 911?

Post by mikemike »

So it's that time again when you're buying a new car. I'm genuinely stuck what to get though. After testing driving both a Porsche 911 and a Porsche Cayman I can't decide which I prefer.

If I got a Cayman I'd probably get a nearly new one, if I went for the 911 it'd be around a 04-05 reg.

What're your throughts?

No vote. Anyone who drives a Porche on American roads is an idiot.

I see you live in England, but I live in America, so I'm saying I would be an idiot to make either choice.

Why would you be an idiot to drive a Porsche on American roads?

It would appear you have never driven here.
American roads are wide, flat, straight (in Porche terms) and full of idiots driving tanks while talking on cell phones.
It would be like wearing an Armani suit to a football game; waste of a good suit/car.

Haha that's a fair point. I've never been so can't comment really. Roads here are perfect for it, full of tiny French and German cars :)

I take it your budget is around £35k then? Very difficult price bracket to choose from. I'd be looking at a Merc SLK AMG (a decent 58 plate) or a BMW M3 (56 plate or maybe even 07), or maybe even a new Nissan 350Z (and save a few quid), but I'm not keen on Porsches.

Between the two options you gave there I'd take the 911. And I'd get then a private plate for it so people thought it was new. :)

I've tried them all, this si the best of the bunch in my opinion. SLK seems a bit too feminine, even if it is AMG. M3 is nice, but I want a real coupe, maybe go for the M3 in a few years. 350Z was what I originally wanted, but the original feels really cheap and plasticy. It's much nicer with the Nismo kit on but then it looks like a cheap boy racers car.

I think I'm going to go for a 03-05 911 with the GT3 Aero kit on, it looks really nice and believe it or not is cheaper than a second hand Cayman.
