XP troubles with php 4.3.3.

XML, Perl, Python, and other languages can be discussed here, even if it isn't PHP (We might forgive you).

XP troubles with php 4.3.3.

Post by phpNoob »

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie as you can see and am very interested learning php. I have downloaded and installed Apache 2.0 (its running as a background service).

I have also downloaded mySQL (I tried to download the newest version 4.0.14b but was advised to use a stable ver. so reverted to 3.23.57 but I am stuck with downloading php so havent yet done anything more than the install to C:/mysql )

So heres the actual reason im putting this post on here. I have a book php in easy steps, in it, it suggests using apache as a testing server, mySQL for Database and php (newest ver). The newest version is 4.3.3 but during the publication of the book the newest version was 4.1.1. I went along to php.net and used a download manager "fresh download by fresh devices" to download the 6.3MB php 4.3.3. from url http://us2.php.net/get/php-4.3.3-Win32. ... net/mirror I saved it to my desktop and planned to unzip it to C:\php but windows XP does not recognise the file type and when I searched the internet for a tool that would windows couldn't find one.

So how do I get a version of php and how do I install it???

I am very new to this and have previously only used html. I hope someone here will be kind enough to look into this for me.

My PC specs -

OS - Windows XP (32bit) Home
PC - Laptop AJP
Processor - 2.6Ghz P4
Ram - 1GB

I just installed the latest version of php last night on my win2000 box. I use winzip to unzip it. You need to make sure and do an extract because it will automatically create all the directories for you.

So I had no problems with this at all....but try the winzip, it is free to download and free to use for 30 days.

it wont stop letting you use it, it just wont bother you for 30 days.let me let it load completely....

100+
200+
300+

it tells me i've had it installed for 373 days. still wokrs fine. just tells me the number of days i've had it and archives i've opened. (the second being misleading, opening the same archive 100 times would increase the number by 100)

It's actually not free to use for life. This is straight from the licensing agreement....

This is not free software. Subject to the terms below, you are hereby licensed by WinZip Computing, Inc. to use one copy of WinZip, on one (1) computer or workstation, for evaluation purposes without charge for a period of 21 days. If you use this software after the 21-day evaluation period a registration fee of $29 is required.

I have to side with m3rajk on this one... In this economy, those who find themselves stuck in an OS that doesn't have loads of Open Source apps resort to what they can. I personally pay for the software I get from random, small companies (or individuals) that put out software because they count as one of us! But if a major corporation puts out software that allows for simple tricks that get past the "mandatory" registration time, then I'll get past them and order a case of rum.

i totally suggest that you install WinRAR instead, you can even open g-zip compressions, .iso cd-image files, .rar(duh...), .tar, etc, try this one, but it's shareware(not free) you can try it for 40 days :D, anyways i don't think it will stop working after the 40 days...

where do you get winrar? i had it once. it has better compression than winzip on larger files.....

i've noticed that under 10m winzip is better than gzip. above 10m gzip is better. i rmemeber winrar being like that too.

ok. i'm suddenly second guessing myself and thinking imeant to write 10k....it was 10 something i saw that....

m3rajk, you can get winrar here. I have used it and it works ok, but I find myself going back to winzip a lot.

Anyway, I am just like most other peolpe out there and use the shareware without registration. I will help the software guys that I use the most....but if I use it once or twice a year, I generally do not.

Just trying to be a good guy and follow those wonderful licensing rules whenever talking on forums...... :D
