PC Monitor needed, with a difference. USB conn's required

Post by simonmlewis »

Hi

I am looking to buy a new PC monitor to plug into my laptop.
I want to plug an external keyboard and mouse into the monitor permanently, so I can just plug the laptop into the monitor USB/HDMI.

I know I could plug it all into the laptop, but it would be good if a monitor is available with the input USB sockets for k/b and mouse, that runs the laptop.

Is such a monitor available?
ps i don't want a docking station.

They are. I have one at work (I'll get make/model once I'm at the office). You'll still need to run as USB out from the laptop into the monitor to power the mouse/keyboard. I've ended up just using a small USB hub instead.

yes that's it.
Dell said they sell no such monitor. And I don't know what I am looking for on Amazon either.
I want one that's 22-23.6". Not that bothered by make, but a decent one.

Thanks.

I have a Dell U2311H, which has 4 USB ports. Sadly, the Dell site lists it as no longer being available and I'm only seeing used on Amazon. Looks like the UZ2315H might be a more recent model, but mostly the same. This Samsung looks like it may fit the bill as well.

I thought the U2414H would do it, as it's high spec, but apparently not.

I was just wondering what the U2414H was missing in terms of features. You were looking for a monitor with USB ports and it has several.

Yes. I spoke with Dell and described that I wanted to have the monitor on my desk, keyboard and mouse connected directly to the monitor. And then when I bring my laptop to the desk, I plug the moinitor into the laptop, and it all comes alive and I can use the exteternal kb and mouse.

They said that one and NONE of theirs do that.

Interesting. That's precisely what I did with my Dell monitor (before getting the external USB hub). Keyboard and mouse plugged into monitor, monitor plugged into computer, everything worked.

Mmm so that one I sent should work?
Basically, if it has USB conn's, should it work?

I'd try contacting Dell again, maybe get someone else. I don't want to give you bad information and end up costing you a bunch of money. My understanding and my experience, however, suggest that that will work. It's just a USB hub built into the monitor. USB connection from your laptop powers it, other devices can then connect to it. You might not be able to charge your phone off it, for instance, but keyboard and mouse certainly worked fine.

That's what I was pointing at with that link earlier. Given those specs, I see no reason what you're trying to accomplish wouldn't work.

Dell tell me that machine that you have, doesn't do what you say it does do.
Then they switched me to Tech Support, and I lost the session.

So I'm no further really. Might pop to a PC world shop sometime.
