First Jobs

Post by Yonderknight »

Hey guys,

I'd just like to know all you guys' first jobs in the web buisiness and some info about them, especially like how you got them, did you advertise, how old where you, etc...

I seem to be getting nowhere with what I'm doing. I just have 1 website which I rarely mention once or twice on some forums. Where do you think I should advertise? I don't think anybody important would hire me since I'm only 15.

Thanks.

Well if your worried about your age then simply dont metion it, as long as you can do the job, and do it well then your age wont matter. Start off by getting a portfolio together showing your work so that people can see that you can do the job, it doesnt matter if you dont get paid for these as its just to show future paying customers what your capible of.

Then also ask yourself what you would look for if you were looking for a web designer and emulate it.

I've never had to advertise myself or my business. My first professional job was the Nokia-Armageddon tie-in site. I got the job through a family friend who was working on it. I got $35/h.

I agree with kettle, that you need to put together a portfolio of works. Don't put everything you've done in this portfolio though. Just the best/highest profile, say 6, pages you've worked on. If you haven't done anything real yet, do a few sites for free or real cheap, but still very professional to get your footing. Churches, schools and other non-profit organizations are often good places to start out.

my first job was to make a CMS, that was about 2 years ago, and the guy still owes me £150 , i was 18 back then, now 21.

i got the job after my own free scripts site went down, and a guy asked if i would make a CMS for him, i did it for £450, only got £300 but it was worth it.

all this start as a hobby, and now i am a full time scripter :D, so get few small jobs and try to make a portfolio, once you have it and your site gets out there, you should be able to pick new clients easily :).

Vicious, I would like to know some more information on like, if you advertise, who you work for (relative, friends, or other people). I'm 15, I don't know where to start looking for a job.
