phpBB forums and machine to run it

Post by Calimero »

Me and my questions :?:

Will we ever stop (or find another forum).

I wonder - how strong machine I would need to host this forum (this software), I need something like specification, with lets say 1000 reg. users and about 50 posts per day.

Don't know have I put this question right, but did my best "building" it.

So, admins, mod and other volunteers - shoot me - with your answers !

You wouldn't need a strong computer at all. Not anymore more than 733mhrz 256mb RAM for SOLID performance.

What you should be worried about is the speed of your connection. Nothing worse than a slow forum.

most likely, a solid connection wont be made with just a normal cable connection for such high a user number, however it is perfectly possible for a small forum with only about 50 members for instance

Whatever the minimum requirements for Apache/PHP/MySQL is.

And a good connection, and server security is your biggest concern.

Ditto, bandwith and security are the most important. Servers don't have to be particularily high-spec machines.

Ok new matters raised :?:

My machine would be

833 P III, 256 SDRAM, 6,4GB HDD, 1MB/s link to the net - shared with other machines / services I got on it - search engine and some other thing-ies.

So - is my connection speed enough (for this sized forum :D , or for how big)

And the security issue - what about that (I'm hit by this totaly blank.)

If I use phpBB forums - and that is the only thing on this machine, OS-Win2003,Apache 2,MySQL 4.0.18, PHP 4.3.4

NOTE - I remembered to ask, When the PHP 5 got out - its installer was not functioning well with mysql - I did entire setup to the manual, and my friend didn't use the installer and made it function (with the same parameters).

Does someone knows is the PHP 5 installer now functional on this problem???

Connection not anything special, but it will suffice.

Google "[google]php apache server security tips tools[/google]", and/or related searches and you'll find a lot of info about securing your server and the potential dangers of running one.

Regarding PHP5 and MySQL, check this link, this link, and this link for more info. :)
