What the heck happened?

Post by Roja »

The site went down for several days, then it comes back up (although portal.php isnt back up?), and the theme is totally changed.

So I go to my profile and try to switch back, and can't?

Templates are like text editors - everyone seems to like a different one - but at least offer the ability to use the default phpbb template (subsilver), since its in use in SO many sites that its familiar.

I'd imagine there are some difficulties behind the scenes, but please, while you are fixing issues, consider adding back in subsilver support and getting portal.php working again.

Thanks!

the short of it: site got attacked and corrupted a file which caused server load to go through the roof. The host locked the account so the server could return to normal. Once we figured out what happened, we took the server down and updated a few things..

I have no idea about the theme thing though.. I think we look a bit like FedEx with that logo.. ;)

All I have to say is: It's nice to be back! And great job to McGruff, Weirdan, Jason, Patrik, and the others involved.

The old theme can be put back. However, I wanted us to focus on a new theme, as I want to start putting work back into the site. Easiest way to do that is to standardize on a single them.

But yes, basically, all the old stuff is fubared. The word I am getting is that it was a very intense DDOS. The attack was coming from many, many sources.

Was this attack a case of: NeverEverSanity?

The information I received was that it was a straight up DOS attack. Fun.

All I can say is that sucks....Jason, I saw that you are a part of the new http://www.phparch.com mailing list; I'm in favor for adding a forum here strictly for security. I host a couple dozen sites all in PHP and I feel it would be beneficial to have an area to discuss prevention of hacks such as the one that effected devnetwork. Anyone else?

I had a quick check and there is a subsilver folder in the install. Will look into it.

Yes. It's a style that is downloadable from phpBB.com, and I liked it. =)

If someone is willing to mod an existing theme, or a design a new one just for these forums, the offer is always open.

Does subsilver not *work* here, or are there extensive mods that have to be made to subsilver for it to function here again?

Subsilver was working as a theme here before the attack, and while I understand that files got corrupted, you can always download a fresh version of subsilver - so I'm puzzled. :)

I understand the desire to reduce work by focusing on one theme, but offering no alternatives (especially when subsilver was offered previously) is .. abruptly disorienting.

If there are mods that are needed to keep subsilver functioning here, please explain further.
