sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r5 package for emerge?

Whether you are using Linux on the desktop or as a server, it's still good that you're using Linux. Linux related questions go here.

sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r5 package for emerge?

Post by AngusL »

Can anyone tell me if there is a single server out there that carries this package for emerge? It would appear that there aren't any... :? If there aren't any, I'm happy enough installing them without emerge, but how do I tell emerge that I've got them installed?

I use Linux primarily for development, and a little light browsing, and while I'm fairly comfortable with Gentoo - it's not what I'm used to.

:? - I think I might have this installed so in which case I'll have the bz2 in /usr/portage/distfiles. I'll have to check to be sure it's r5 though.

FYI: You can't do an emerge to recompile your new kernel from the sources... gentoo provide genkernel for that, but even so it's simple to do yourself if you have a little guide alongside ;)

Oh no, I know how to recompile a kernel (theoretically anyway, I did it exactly once on a Fedora Core 3 system a wee while ago). Actually, the development is mostly my own OS kernel. :P

It's just that there are lots of things, mainly drivers obviously, that need the kernel sources for one thing or another (this particular time, it's alsa - I'm determined to get sound to work :P).

Okay, thanks. :) I've upgraded using gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r8 from the previous link, and am currently sitting at a freshly-compiled system running that version of the kernel.

All works now. :)

Thanks guys. :) (Can I just say I love the way Gentoo is based around compiling everything as per your wishes - there's not too much handholding, but enough to get you in the right direction - I must do a Stage 1 rebuild at some point :D)
