Ok, I know this is a massive thread-necro (sorry!), but my curiosity finally got the better of me. When I read this thread almost a year ago, I really wanted to know what the project was about (mostly because of the people who so quickly volunteered). Has this project been completed or can someone at least now say what the project was?

The idea was to create a search engine that could accept an uploaded image and find similar images from around the internet.

Why would anyone want to do that? Only semi-practical usage I can come up with is if you upload a holiday photo of, say, the Eiffel Tower, and look at other peoples photos of it.

Thanks onion. That's kind of what I suspected it was. Did the project ever come to fruition? I would be interested in using something like that.onion2k wrote:The idea was to create a search engine that could accept an uploaded image and find similar images from around the internet.

There are plenty of reasons for using it ... finding images that are similar to your image is just one. Finding images that you own the copyright on that people have nicked is another. There are probably others.jayshields wrote:Why would anyone want to do that? The reason for the project was really just to see if it could be done I think. Some progress was made, but like most projects it fizzled out because it was damn hard and people had better things to be doing.

And we also found other sites that do pretty much the same thing, that put a damper on some things.
