Dominos Pizza Order progress meter thingy majiggy

Post by Chris Corbyn »

Has anyone ordered dominos pizza online lately? They have a progress meter which tells you when the pizza is being made, then when it's being cooked, then when it gets sent for delivery.... and it appears to be accurate. Pretty cool idea. Now they just need a web cam so you can watch them doing all that!

Cool, is it actual progress, or just "if they were making this pizza at the average speed, it would be right about.. here!"

I'm not sure, it seemed pretty accurate. I asked the delivery guy but his response was "I dunno, I just deliver the pizzas..."

Having worked at a pizza shop, I am not sure how this could be accurate. Someone would have to be like "this pizza for this guy is going in the oven, click the box on the screen" which would never ever happen. If they did somehow figure out a way to do this then that would be absolutly amazing but I doubt it.

I'm fairly sure it's guesswork based on a well understood process. It's definitely a nice feedback widget though!

Pretty sure it's a radio transmitter in each dough ball.

That's very cool. :) You/someone should time how long each step takes, then later order another pizza (or have someone else do it, such as someone from DevNetwork) and compare times. If the times are the same, we'll know that it's just an estimation.

I actually stopped by my local Domino's today to ask them about this new technological advancement, and my findings were quite surprising...

The progress meter DOES accurately represent the entire "creation to delivery" process in real-time. The genius behind the system is several small nanoprocessors that are embedded in both the cheese and crust of the pizza. The reason there is several, is because the one that detects the tossing and stretching of the dough, is subsequently damaged when thrown into the 500 degree oven. This is why Domino's utilized a 2nd nanoprocessor that can withstand these constant temperatures without fail, and deliver realtime updates as to the progress of the baking cycle. A third and final chip, which I am told is not a nano-processor, but rather a standard microchip, is then embedded into the side-flap of the cardboard pizza box, which through triangulation, communicates with 12 orbiting satellites to give precise coordinates on the location of each pizza being delivered respective of their destinations. The manager of the local Domino's told me this process was invented by an in-house GIS engineer at the Detroit, MI headquarters after shareholders were demanding better accounting of both the books and the pizzas.

Truly and inspirational story.
