Re: why are you using linux (for what)?
I don't use linux desktops, I have servers running linux (including development one, on which I do most of my development using vim) and ssh there as necessary from my windows workstation.
Re: why are you using linux (for what)?
I've so far only got a server running Ubuntu 7.10-server (apache, mysql, ssh, ftp, samba, svn repository) used as a sandbox for screwing around with as well as a local server. I am somewhat interested in using Ubuntu on my desktop computer too but the fact that I play alot of Windows-only games along with not wanting to dual-boot have prevented me from installing it so far.

With all these people trying to migrate to using unix exclusively I feel special being happy with my heterogeneous setup.

The average monthly salary here in Bulgaria is about 310 euro (~440$) - there are a lot of unhappy PC ownersWeirdan wrote:With all these people trying to migrate to using unix exclusively I feel special being happy with my heterogeneous setup.

Re: why are you using linux (for what)?
I use Linux for servers and have a Linux workstation and a Windows laptop. I use Eclipse on both so the IDEs are identical as I pull code from CVS so I can switch machines whenever. Linux comes with all of the requisite SSH/SFTP tools ... the need to be installed on Windows (puTTY and WinSCP). I use OpenOffice, GIMP, Firefox/Thunderbird on both as well.
Maybe it is that I know Unix as well as I know Windows, but I find that Windows more often gets in the way, whereas Linux more often gives me way a do to things. I should note that I run vanilla desktops and have very little interest in customizing it with the latest l33t eye candy. I suppose if I used Windows servers I would prefer the click a bunch of dialog boxes style of doing things ... but I don't.

Re: why are you using linux (for what)?
I use *nix on the servers only, but I do use various win32 platforms as servers aswell. Webdevelopment in various ways. Tcl/tk and C/C++ for ircnetworking/scripting only. I'm leaning at the way Weirdan's setup, not nearly as serious as VladSun.
I've tried to move away to Linux completely for some time now without success. This because it takes (for me) to long time to learn and because I really don't want to break anything that's not broken.
Never understood the one vs. the_other trolling as I never had problems with either.

I've learned that average salary by no means represent the economic situation for programmers in Eastern Europe - my own salary is, I think, five times higher than average in my country.VladSun wrote: The average monthly salary here in Bulgaria is about 310 euro (~440$) - there are a lot of unhappy PC owners.

It's true but "PC owner !== software developer"Weirdan wrote:I've learned that average salary by no means represent the economic situation for programmers in Eastern Europe - my own salary is, I think, five times higher than average in my country.VladSun wrote: The average monthly salary here in Bulgaria is about 310 euro (~440$) - there are a lot of unhappy PC owners.

Re: why are you using linux (for what)?
But we were talking about software developers - look at the poll questions. Rich programming environment do not benefit home users who are mostly interested in surfing, games and video/music.VladSun wrote:It's true but "PC owner !== software developer"

Your'e joking right? I must have missed the sarcasm in that comment...VladSun wrote:It's true but "PC owner !== software developer"
Re: why are you using linux (for what)?
I use linux for everything I do. Other than gaming, I actually don't have a need for Windows. What is also odd, and this will probably have me branded as an anti-ms evangelist, is since I stopped using Windows, I've noticed so many things about MS and their products that are just mind boggling and would hinder users, either deliberately or just from idiocy.
Although I am typing this from a windows laptop, as I don't have my own machine setup in this house (house mates laptop)
