I use Edit Plus 3. Not sure how it compares to some of the others; aside from Notepad (the orignal), it's all I've used.

I have been using nuSphere phpED for a few years. I must say they are completely incapable of putting out a release without bugs in it. I have been fighting with them for months trying to get them to fix an issue. In phpED we have "workspaces" which are collections of "projects". Upon closing and opening back up phpED, or rebooting my computer, the work space is not resumed (even though the option in the settings says remember my work space). Other bugs include things such as floating panels disappearing after unplugging and plugging back in monitors, issues with panels being redrawn after resizing them. Positions of floating windows being reset if I turn off and back on my computer the next day, etc...

If you go to the nusphere forums you will see he has had all his customers asking for basic features like variable highlighting, like 50 people asked over the course of 2yrs, and he still has no roadmap for when that will be available.

They have acknowledged and confirmed the bug 2 months ago, and they keep releasing new versions, while neglecting my bug. He has support staff responding to my ticket that keep asking for the same <span style='color:blue' title='I&#39;m naughty, are you naughty?'>smurf</span> over and over again (registry exports, screenshots, descriptions of the problem)... which I keep supplying. They call me by the wrong name in the ticket, and keep asking for information I have already provided. I am so glad I did not pay $400 for the 3yr updates program.

I told them numerous times that if they continue to leave my ticket idle for weeks at a time, and asking me to provide information I already provided, that I would be leaving bad reviews on various forums. They did not seem to care. I don't understand how a company can honestly do a release of a new version that adds new features, without fixing old existing issues.

It feels like I am sending them bug reports every few days. Their issue tracking system sucks too because there is no way to view your own ticket. All in all their products are pretty decent, but their "support" is aggravating in that they appear to use a home-made ticketing system where I can't even view my ticket's history. This makes it virtually impossible to communicate effectively as you can see below. Even when I try to send them screenshots and such their email system bounces it. They were unable to provide a maximum filesize. I feel like they are not pro-active at all.

Example

Me - sends in bug report that I cannot show because they do not give me access to view my whole ticket. (When reading keep in mind all the bug reports I am helping them with in parallel, and the fact they have NO ticket system)

Them Dec 5
Dear Josh, could you please send us the screenshots of Tools->Settings->IDE Settings
and export of the registry HKCU\Software\NuSphere\phped59\
Me - Dec 5
Heres the IDE settings. Im not sure what you mean with the registry. Here is what I see when I open regedit.
(sends screenshots of that registry, and of the settings[/quote]

Them - Dec 9
Dear Josh, thank you. We really need the export of the registry, not the screenshot. Also,
how do you start the IDE? Do you click on php files or on Desktop icon, or using Start->programs->nusphere->phped?
If you start it using Start->programs->nusphere->phped does Workspace get loaded?
Many thanks, Support
Me - Dec 9
I'm using a shortcut to "C:\Program Files (x86)\NuSphere\PhpED\phped.exe"

I asked you in my previous email how do I export the registry step by step. Thanks
Me - Dec 12
A few Days and you are not helping me help you. Please tell me exactly what you want me to do step by step for the registry export. Do you want me to export my whole machine's registry?
(I send them a registry export, not sure how to do it properly because I don't know alot about registries, they still have not told me step by step what to do.) It may seem like I am being unresponsive but keep in mind their messages come in without any context whatsoever, since I cant even view my own ticket. Keep in mind I have 10+ bug reports open with them at a time and I can barely tell which is which, let alone remember the context or our ticket without searching my emails. The fact they dont have a proper ticket system is an absolute mockery.

By this point I've pretty much accepted their support staff is just going to keep stalling.

Them - Dec 14
Dear Dave, you need to run command 'regedit', select HKCU\Software\NuSphere\phped59\ there, select "export" from the menu, save it to a file, zip that file and send it to us please.
Hope it helps, sorry for all these troubles.
Best Regards, Support
(I am a little confused and thought when I exported the "root" of my registry it would included everything)

Me - Dec 14
I am getting a little impatient!

I just sent the FULL registry in my last email and my name is NOT Dave!

Josh
Them - Dec 14
Dear Josh, I am very sorry - I typed in a wrong name. I was answering this question you asked in the previous note:
me - Dec 14
Yes it makes sense but I already sent you the FULL registry export. The fact I can't log in and view my tickets history is pretty crappy.
Them - Dec 16
Dear Josh, first of all we are very sorry that this issue is taking so long - it is quite unusual. We are obligated and absolutely willing to help you, but unfortunately we are having miscommunications problem and we would like to do our very best to resolve it.
UNfortunately in the file you sent us there seem to be the export of only HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\h1cfile while we need
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\NuSphere\phped59\.
We think you missed the step of selecting HKCU\Software\NuSphere\phped59\ after regedit and before doing export

We also would like to get the file in the zip, to make sire there is no corruption
and the screenshot of Tools->Settings->IDE, description of how do you open PhpED:
by clicking on PHP files or by clicking PHPED iconon the Desktop?
If it is the latter we need the screenshot of the properties of that icon
We hope it helps.
Thank you very much for your patience in this matter.
Sincerely, support
( they want the same screenshot sent again and again?). They want me to "tell them how I start the IDE" over and over again. I simply don't have the time for this crap.

Me - Dec 16 ( my question as to what they meant by registry export from Dec 5 is finally answered)
Here is the proper registry export (I asked *multiple* times for the steps to do this). Now you finally provided steps so here it is.

Yes I agree there is a communication issue, (ON YOUR END) I already answered the rest of your questions in previous emails. Must I actually repeat myself? If so, please provide a URL where I can visit to view the ticket's history.

Josh
Me- December 26
I have not heard back in 2 weeks. Since this has been open for months I might just have to leave bad reviews on devnetwork.net, a php forum of which I have over 3,000 posts and am highly respected. I do not wish to hurt your sales but you have charged me for a product you refuse to bugfix.

Josh
I sent them a link to this thread. Now that is is public lets see if they are going to start being proactive.

Like I said all in all it is an excellent product, don't get me wrong. its the only php IDE with a debugger that will work on Windows Vista, however I would not rely on it in any way. What if there is a bug that stops you from doing your work altogether? as you can see you would have missed your deadlines. I would have gladly shelled out the extra $400 for the latest Zend Studio (if their debugger actually worked on vista)

PHPEclipse supports:
* XDebug support
* DBG Support

Would those not work for you? PHPEclipse also has workspaces and project management (as per the Eclipse framework) and has never seemed too buggy to me.

In fact, according to the comparison chart, DBG is exactly the debugger that PHPed uses.

Maybe it's time for you to go Open Source!

DBG is a proprietary debugger written by NuSphere. Without purchasing NuSphere you only get the "free" DBG which doesn't include "set execute point" in the debugger. Now that I have the pro debugger I will check out eclipse again.

Seriously freaking NuSphere should just focus on making that debugger, and give up on IDEs. Theres a million features I could think of for a debugger.
Oh come on, you can't be serious.

Tell me what you want a screenshot of. You want to see the blank
workspaces pane? I have 4 "screens"

Well, purchase NuSphere, and use the debugger with PHP Eclipse!

It definitely has code folding, but I don't know about a class browser. (It does have quite a few plugins, though.) Kate is generic. I'm really waiting for KDevelop4 with proper PHP support. It's in beta now, and will have some really cool features when it's ready!

Any Vim user (myself included) would hardly call that minimal :D .

Any GUI user (myself included) would hardly call that usable! :D

P.S. Vim is downright awesome- it just takes more time to learn how to use it effectively than I have time for. I'd rather learn how to do something useful in PHP, or write some code I need than spend a week learning a new text editor. That said, Kate has a "Vi Input Mode"... you can guess what it does... :)

I started with regular notepad, but that was quite hard, so I searched the internet and found Notepad++, months after using it for the first time my brother told me he was also using notepad++ for his job, so I was quite impressed :p
I'm still a starter php-er though :)

Starting with vim takes only half an hour (+ 5-10 minutes for every new feature you need). Mastering it is another matter (and hardly achievable goal to be honest) - I use vim exclusively for about 5 years already and still find something new from time to time.

I've just tried that... it's not really useful. Couldn't even close a fold with 'zc'.
