Any gamers dropped windows as desktop OS?
I keep looking at dropping windows vista for a linux desktop.
Whilst I can run email/web, office and web dev apps on linux I don't think I can run games like (Everquest 2, Lord of things rings online and warhammer) on linux. This means I can't convert fully. I don't like the idea of dual boot as i've heard of people having problems when doing so.
I've been thinking about buying a mini box like the new EEEbox to run linux on for everything apart from gaming which i'd use my more powerful windows pc for.

I had the same issue. I wanted to drop windows vista and use linux fedora only. But had to have a dual boot for games. I tried using wine in linux for games, but it does not run very well.
I have never had a problem with dual boot! It is easy to setup, especially if you have windows already installed and want to install linux as the second boot. Linux will do all the partitioning and dual boot for you.
Linux will run great on your desktop as Linux is 64bit and will utilise the multi-cores properly unlike sh**ty windows.

Wooaaahh...! You can get most *nix distros in both 32-bit and 64-bit, same as you can with Windows. Also, AFAIK, Windows utilises multi-core processors just as well as most *nix distros do.jaoudestudios wrote:Linux will run great on your desktop as Linux is 64bit and will utilise the multi-cores properly unlike sh**ty windows.
On topic: why do you want to drop Windows? What can Linux do that Windows cannot do? In my opinion - if you play games and have enough money to buy Windows, there's no way you can only use Linux - yet.
Re: Any gamers dropped windows as desktop OS?
If I wanted to do that I'd have to get another drive, my raptor wouldn't have room and my storage drive i like to keep OS free.

windows (<=XP) had some multi-core management problems, it is probably fixed nowjayshields wrote:Wooaaahh...! You can get most *nix distros in both 32-bit and 64-bit, same as you can with Windows. Also, AFAIK, Windows utilises multi-core processors just as well as most *nix distros do.

but it's just my opinion ...
Re: Any gamers dropped windows as desktop OS?
I have Linux (Ubuntu) installed on my computer at home and can do everything on it. It is faster, easier to use than Windows. The only thing it doesn't do well is play some games. I do have a duel boot (GRUB), which works perfectly BTW, and sometimes log into Windows XP to play some games. You can play some Windows games under Linux via Wine (WoW for instance) but EQII won't work.
Opps, Looks like I'm wrong: EQ2 does work on Linux: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeuicyNyW1Q

Linux is FREE and so almost all the software. A more worthwhile question is why are you still using Windows?jayshields wrote:jaoudestudios wrote:On topic: why do you want to drop Windows? In my humble opinion, you are dead-wrong: one can easily use Linux as your only OS and you don't have to be that computer savvy.

Sounds great, how do I get eq2, war online and lotr online running in linux?marcth wrote:In my humble opinion, you are dead-wrong: one can easily use Linux as your only OS and you don't have to be that computer savvy.

Re: Any gamers dropped windows as desktop OS?
I'm still using Windows because I know how to do everything and anything on it, without searching the internet or using command line. I already have it installed, so cost is not an issue. It runs fine (Vista Ultimate) and hasn't ever crashed. Whenever software is released (be it a game, office suite, web browser, whatever), there's no question of "are they going to release a Linux version?". I know it's available on Windows. The office suite (which I already have installed, so again cost is not an issue) is much better than OpenOffice. If I really have to use the command line for anything, I've got cygwin - I've never bothered using it, I only installed it to have a play with it. What about Photoshop compared to the GIMP?marcth wrote:Linux is FREE and so almost all the software. I'm quite fed up of people saying "what about virtualisation, Wine, etc" - it's just not the same as running it natively, besides having to rely on volunteers to get your software working.
I ran Ubuntu for a while, and have used a couple of other distros, and I do like Linux and I understand why people choose it as an OS but, in my opinion, if someone offers you either Windows or Linux at no cost, and you're using it for a home PC, there's no reason to choose Linux over Windows.
Re: Any gamers dropped windows as desktop OS?
I can respect most of the things you wrote, but not this. Forget about software development for a second and answer this question: Who is going to to a better job? A volunteer who is passionate about his/her work or someone who does it for a paycheck? Do you like Apache? How about PHP? Do you like mySQL? Don't you rely on these groups to provide you with top quality solutions? Not only has it been postulated by psychology as being true (Google it) but the sheer dominance of the aforementioned open-source technologies demonstrate this is the case. And as far as operating systems are concerned, I can only imagine how hard it must be for passionate software developers to complete with for-profit, inter-colluding corporations that wouldn't lift a finger to help you if it affected their bottom line. Yet open-source is succeeding--perhaps not as well in western countries. In Linux, virtualisation is an interim measure implemented to try an appease people like you. I apologize if that irritates you.jayshields wrote:I'm quite fed up of people saying "what about virtualisation, Wine, etc" - it's just not the same as running it natively, besides having to rely on volunteers to get your software working.
You need to drag & drop Windows Vista into the recycle bin--that OS was not designed for you; it was designed for content providers (Whether you realize it or not OR read your EULA). Go back to Windows XP, if you want--it's safe and you know how to use it. Use a Mac, if that floats your boat. Or, try Linux--if my computer-illiterate girlfriend was able to google "Ubuntu DVD not working" and get a DRM/zone restricted DVD playing in under 2 minutes, I'm sure you can figure it out too if you tried.
I appologize for writing this. You have a right to your opinion as do I. I just wanted to let you know what you wrote is offensive to my core. I've thought up of many nicknames for you, most of which involved swear words, and have settled on this one. Hence forth thou shall be referred to as a Consumer Whore.
If I were offered a free version of Windows Vista, I wouldn't accept it. Their software package are not recyclable.

Re: Any gamers dropped windows as desktop OS?
I am all for Linux, but Jay is right about Photoshop, it is much better than the GIMP
Mac is similar to Linux, both are based on Unix - which is a good foundation. Most webservers are linux as they are great work horses and now with great GUI so becoming a home desktop computer too.
Just as a comparison, windows vista with a few programs installed and most vista (3d) stuff turned off still uses over 1GB of ram, while linux fedora with all 3d stuff turned on (3d cube desktop etc), multiple desktops, multiple users, LAMP, mailserver (basically much more than windows) is only using just over 0.5GB of ram. Explain that!?!?!!?
Can a windows machine connect to a Mac or Linux machine, answer NO! Can Linux connect to both, answer YES. Unfortunately, games do not work on linux properly and until it does I dont think most people will get rid of windows.
The bottom line is, would I pay for linux, YES, would I pay for windows, NO! Do I need windows to play games, YES, do I need windows for anything else, NO!
Hope that clears a few things up

I am surprised that no one mentioned the main place to go for playing games on Linux:

I understand what you're saying, and I'm sorry if I'm about to be a prick, but here's a fact: You'll never, ever have to pay a dime for Linux unless the private sector or some new screwed up law has its way. Open-source is free (There is no word in English to express the concept--freedom...choice...beer...all fall short).jaoudestudios wrote:The bottom line is, would I pay for linux, YES, would I pay for windows, NO! Cedaga was mentioned in this post when people were talking about virtualization. Cedaga is a failed business model as far as I'm concerned.arborint wrote:I am surprised that no one mentioned the main place to go for playing games on Linux:

I hate GIMP just as much as I hate Photoshop. Give me MS Paint any day! You should have seen my website before I used an open-source CSS design. My point is this: I have no artistic skills, so using GIMP or Photoshop is a waste of time. That's not interesting. What is interesting is that all designers I have EVER worked with in the last 10+ years have all provided designs using a Macintosh. Why is that?jaoudestudios wrote:I am all for Linux, but Jay is right about Photoshop, it is much better than the GIMP![]()

I am glad linux will always be free, I am just saying that it is so good that I would pay for it
What program did they use on the Mac? I work with 25 designers and they are all on Macs but they use photoshop and illustrator, both Adobe.
