Complicated SMTP Mail Problem

Post by gasper000 »

Well, I am a php beginner trying to develop a php form which uses the confirmation email process as a validation technique. I tried editing php.ini, downloaded pear, tried different servers but everytime I end with having an error sending the confirmation email. I used Yahoo, Google, & AOL servers.

I will explain the google trial as I tested sending an email using Outlook Express using these settings & it was a successful trial.

Server details
Name: Google
SMTP Server: smtp.google.com
Port: 465

php.ini Configuration
[mail function]
For Win32 only.
SMTP = smtp.google.com
smtp_port = 465

Pear Settings
smtp.php

I have spent 2 weeks trying to fix this but I couldn't go any further. Do you have any ideas ?!

Firstly, you shouldn't have to edit somebody else's class in order to change the properties in it. It appears you have hacked the code to try and use this class and that's not right ;)

But to answer your question, I don't think Pear Mail will work for you. Google requires TLS encryption and from what I can see Pear Mail doesn't support this -- It just won't work at all without TLS.

Swift Mailer will work, although it's possible you have firewall issues based on the symptoms of exceeding 30 seconds.

http://swiftmailer.org/

I've got a beta of the next version that's likely to be released as soon as I get back from my holiday around 3rd January.

Thank you for answering my question.

First, I wanna tell you that I got all the codes from free online code resources either free sites providing codes or forums. :wink:

Second, how can I add TLS encryption ?!

Thank you again for your reply...I will try swiftmailer.org & see the results.

I've had good experience with PHPMailer. Works fine for me to send emails with Google's SMTP.

I heard much about PHPMailer but would it be useful to use when sending an automatic confirmation email that should be sent whenever a user registers ?!

Sure, as long as it helps you getting your emails sent (whatever their purpose), why not?

Well, I got PHPMAILER...installed it & tried the following example.

First the PHPMailer files configuration:

1. phpmailer.lang-en.php

Code: Select all

<?php
/**
 * PHPMailer language file.
 * English Version
 */

$PHPMAILER_LANG = array();

$PHPMAILER_LANG["provide_address"]      = 'You must provide at least one ' .
                                          'recipient email address.';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["mailer_not_supported"] = ' mailer is not supported.';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["execute"]              = 'Could not execute: ';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["instantiate"]          = 'Could not instantiate mail function.';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["authenticate"]         = 'SMTP Error: Could not authenticate.';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["from_failed"]          = 'The following From address failed: ';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["recipients_failed"]    = 'SMTP Error: The following ' .
                                          'recipients failed: ';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["data_not_accepted"]    = 'SMTP Error: Data not accepted.';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["connect_host"]         = 'SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host.';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["file_access"]          = 'Could not access file: ';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["file_open"]            = 'File Error: Could not open file: ';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["encoding"]             = 'Unknown encoding: ';
$PHPMAILER_LANG["signing"]              = 'Signing Error: ';

?>

2. class.smtp.php

Code: Select all

The example I used to send an email

Code: Select all

<?php
// This example will send mail through the SMTP server with authentication.
require("class.phpmailer.php"); // be sure to change this to your location!
$mail = new PHPMailer();
$mail->IsSMTP();
$mail->SMTPAuth = true; // enable SMTP authentication
$mail->SMTPSecure = "ssl"; // sets the prefix to the servier
$mail->Host = "smtp.gmail.com"; // sets GMAIL as the SMTP server
$mail->Port = 465; // set the SMTP port
$mail->Username = "**my_username**@gmail.com"; // GMAIL username
$mail->Password = "**my_password**"; // GMAIL password
$mail->From = "**my_username**@gmail.com";
$mail->FromName = "gas";
$mail->AddAddress("**my_username**@gmail.com");
$mail->Subject = "Test PHPMailer Message";
$mail->Body = "Hi! \n\n This was sent with phpMailer_example3.php.";
if(!$mail->Send()) {
echo 'Message was not sent.';
echo 'Mailer error: ' . $mail->ErrorInfo;
} else {
echo 'Message has been sent.';
}
?>

The RESULT

Message was not sent.Mailer error: SMTP Error: Could not connect to SMTP host. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Re: Complicated SMTP Mail Problem

Post by Apollo »

Linking to phpmailer would have been sufficient, no need to post the complete source code for all files ;)

I'm doing almost exactly the same as you, except

- I use "ssl://smtp.gmail.com:465" as host (no Port or SMTPSecure specified seperately)
- Unless I'm mistaken, gmail does not send mail from & to the same account

but the first should make no difference and the second has nothing to do with connecting.
Nonetheless, what happens if you try a host string with protocol and port included?
