The What editor do you use? 2008 thread ... does anyone else think it ought to be replaced with a fresh poll or even just be removed? A number of popular IDEs/editors are missing from the list. It's never going to be possible to list them all, but there are a number of prominent IDEs that have become increasingly popular lately that are notable by their absence.
Perhaps the discussion could also be pushed into a tip-sharing format or a discussion of stand-out/cool features rather than being a home for dreamweaver-is-the-best-because-I-use-it-to-make-a-website-about-my-dog kind of posts?

I'd like that.
It would be cool to have feature tables like these on Wikipedia, but have comments under each one.
I'm not sure how you would create this type of matrix in a forum framework. Maybe a stand-alone web site?

What if it was a yearly thing; not sure if this was the original intention with the first post. I'd like to see it replaced. It's presence would be purely academic but it would be interesting to see how IDE's/editors (and their usage) change.greyhoundcode wrote:The What editor do you use? 2008 thread

I don't see much point in creating a new one. There's precious little discussion in that thread; people vote and then post a short comment that contains no more information than the vote itself. Leave it be or lock it, I don't care either way, but I wouldn't bother with a new one.

The thing is there have been little gems of information in there, admittedly not many though
There is also the aspect of seeing what other people are using. Obviously if jrktbg has made his one and only post in the forum and it's something inane like "Notepad is the best and is free," then it isn't very interesting, but if a prominent member of the forum says, "Hey guys - I just switched back to using nano and my productivity has soared! I just type Ctrl+F+I+X and it writes the whole project!" then, personally, I do find that interesting.
Basically I think there is room to mix things up a little and turn it into something a bit more useful and interesting than it currently is - but if that isn't going to happen then let's lock that mother down.

It has potential to be interesting, no doubt, it's just a question of signal to noise ratio and how to control that, if it can be controlled, and how much time is worth devoting to maintaining it.
Re: What editor do you use? 2008 - Revise?
It was intended to be a yearly thing, but never really got past 2008 thread that replaced an older thread about editors.What if it was a yearly thing;
I'm happy to replace it if anyone bothers to compile current list of popular editors.I'd like to see it replaced.
It proved invaluable in preventing threads like 'I've just started with PHP, what editor should I use?' to crop up. There's even less sense to have lots of those threads; everyone would suggest just what they use and now they can do that in a centralized fashion.I don't see much point in creating a new one.
That thread also has another use as a honeypot for simple bots (along with 'Introduce yourself' thread).
